This week in art class : a portrait

I deliberately thickened up her eyebrows, nose and chin a little, to illustrate this quote :

"While still in early youth Fëanor wedded Nerdanel, a maiden of the Noldor; at which many wondered, for she was not among the fairest of her people. But she was strong, and free of mind, and filled with the desire of knowledge.
Morgoth’s Ring, HoME Vol 10, Part 3, Section 2, Of Fëanor and the Unchaining of Melkor "

So she could be more conventionally pretty though I'm not sure about her lips, and as usual the photography has done the painting no favours..  I did this because I thought the hair might be more educational to paint than last week's hairy dog, and I do feel I learned a fair bit from painting it.

... I amended her eye and mouth to give better perspective.  You can see how hard it is to be consistent when taking photos when the light changes!

The hair is great, I've known redheads with exactly those combinations of colors. I think you achieved the balance of attractive but perhaps not conventionally pretty! Is tricky even to write, much less to draw well. That kind of thing is so much in the eye of the beholder. I am sure Feanor found her extremely appealing! I like her brooch--nice touch.

I assume that Feanor probably made the brooch for her, so presumably this is before she actually walked out on him!

I feel like I could touch the hair, and she looks a woman to be reckoned with.

I'm going to take the hair back to the class and see if Colin the Art can come up with any ideas for further improving it. This was my third attempt at it. But I might try painting some other-colour hair next and see if I can make that work.

Really like this - her hair looks great and you can really see how much your faces have improved :) I think the thing with the lips might be that they don't look quite as side-on as her nose, if that makes sense? But really, it's loads better than I could manage, she looks very life-like!

You're right! I was doing the thing where you paint an eye and lips rather than a face, again. Her brow ridge and the left side of her mouth should be lower so that it goes away from the viewer.

The lips look OK to me - they look like they're coming out of the painting, which is the vivid effect I think I'd want!

Good job on the hair, too. :-)

She kind of has 80s pop star hair, but it's very *well painted* 80s pop star hair!
