Is rehoming an old dog ever the right thing to do?

Sometimes people ask if it's really fair to rehome elderly dogs.  Surely when they've lived all their lives with one owner or in one place, it's very hard on them for everything to change.  Can they ever really bond with a new owner?  Won't they be terribly miserable?   We even occasionally encounter the odd vet who doesn't want to investigate a medical problem with a dog because they are convinced it must be down to a broken heart.

So, is it OK to move an old dog to a new home, if circumstances dictate that he cannot stay where he is?  Yes, actually, it really is.

I never met Oscar, but I talked to the person who first contacted us, and advertised for a foster home for him.  I was the one that was dubious whether he was really in a fit state to be moved, and I'm so glad I was wrong.
